Story Stick Kitchens are for those tired of generic and predictable kitchens. We are not a conventional kitchen cabinet company. We are craftsman who offer kitchen furniture for those wanting something different.
We don’t focus on the wall hugging linear foot sale of cabinets and counters because we know quantity doesn’t make for a good kitchen. We focus on how the home is being lived and how we can support the kitchens purpose of cooking, eating, and socializing. This is seen by furniture designed to suit specific activities (i.e. cooking, washing, social landing spots)
We don’t prefer complicating installs. We prefer making this as simple as possible by creating unfussy kitchen furniture that can be treated as either fitted or unfitted*.
We don’t concentrate on mimicking trend cycles. We concentrate on timeless design and materials that will be long standing.
We don’t pattern conventional practices that lead to monotonous expanses of wall based cabinets. We pattern after specific activity/use, ergonomics*, and refined details (the finesse of a craftsman).
We don’t go after low quality materials and construction methods that are found wanting. We build at our bench with fine materials using traditional methods while always asking ourselves “is this our best work?”
*Words we use that require some explaining.
-Ergonomics- how the dimensions of the body interacts with furniture in relation to efficiency and comfort.
-Unfitted Kitchen- A kitchen composed of freestanding independent furniture constructed like traditional furniture, finished on all sides, and designed for specific uses. Unfitted kitchens Create a less monotonous effect by creating a collection of pieces that act as a whole.
-Fitted kitchen- A kitchen composed of attached plywood boxes finished on the front side and typically wall hugging. Creates the effect of monolithic banks of matching cabinetry with expansive same height counters.
-Specific activity/use- Furniture designed for specific tasks such as washing, cook/prep, and storage.
-Traditional Methods- Time honored and proven construction techniques. Such examples are seen in joinery, or the way wood members join together (i.e. dovetail and mortise and tenon joints).
